Yufuin and Aso-San
Our second trip to Japan was for Christmas and New Year 2006/2007. We didn’t get out and about as much as the last trip because we spent more time in Fukuoka making plans for the wedding.
We only went outside of Fukuoka a couple of times, the first time being an overnight trip to Yufuin in Ōita Prefecture, where we stayed in a traditional Japanese guest house (Ryokan).
While we were there we took a bus tour that drove us round the mountains of Ōita and Kumamoto Prefectures, ending in a ride up the cable-car to the top of Mount Aso (or “Aso-San”).
Aso-San is the largest active volcano in Japan. We got quite close to the edge of the crater but couldn’t stay there long because of the strong winds and poisonous gases being blown out.
