Setsubun

Today is Setsubun – the day before the beginning of spring. On this day the Japanese perform a mamemaki (bean scattering) ceremony to “cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the year to come”.

A few photos here. We didn’t really do it properly – it’s a bit too cold to be standing outside having beans chucked at you. Should have done it this morning when it was lighter (for better pics) and a bit warmer.
