iPhone touch screen and static interference

Recently the touch screen on my iPhone has been behaving quite strangely. Every so often it’ll either stop reacting at all, or will behave as though I were jabbing my finger all over it in random places. The latter is quite annoying as it’ll often end up sending an email or calling a random contact out of the address book.

It seems to be caused by static electricity building up. If I touch a grounded metal object while holding the iPhone, the problem stops. At least for some time, then eventually starts again.

I’ve taken it back to the shop a couple of times, but they’re not convinced that it’s a problem with the hardware. Their idea of fixing it was to spray it with compressed air, and then do a complete reset of the software. Neither are practical solutions, really. They say they won’t replace the phone unless the problem can be reproduced in the store, immediately after the SW reset. And of course, it doesn’t happen then…

you are not alone. I have been experiencing the same problem for the last 6 months… although it usually happens when I first try to use the phone in the mornings and then (after I give up and put it away for an hour or so) it goes away unit the next morning. grounding myself and/or the phone doesnt seem to work for me, although I might not be doing it properly (does touching the kitchen faucet count?).
I concure that this is one of the most anoying problems given that it happens to me when I want to be checking my mail before heading out to work, and cannot, and secondly, because it never shows the same symptoms when I would like to demonstrate the problem to someone… really fricken anoying, but somehow good to know that I am not the only one trying to figure out a solution to this one.
oh, maybe it only happens to iphone owners who are named David…

I am having the same problem. I can even hover my finger a half inch above the screen and have it select random icons. I’m also having issues pressing the E and S characters on the keyboard or the #3. Sometimes a reset fixes it, sometimes it doesn’t. I have a genius bar appointment tonight.

Luckily I was able to get mine replaced in the end. It took several visits to the Softbank store though.

Based on my experience I believe it’s a hardware fault and the only way to fix it is to replace the phone with a new one.
