Colmar, Ribeauvillé, & Haut Kœnigsbourg

November 8, 2006

Another trip to the Alsace area of France earlier this year. This time we drove to Colmar on Saturday morning and spent the day there, then visited Ribeauvillé and Haut Kœnigsbourg on the way back to Munich on Sunday.

We didn’t have much time at Haut Kœnigsbourg so just had a walk around the outside of the castle rather than going inside and doing the full tour.

We had already been to Ribeauvillé a few times after previous visits to Strasbourg and found the Metz Freres wine shop. Apart from selling very good wines, the shop has a small museum at the back where you can see traditional wine making equipment.

Strasbourg & St. Hippolyte

November 3, 2006

Last month we went to Strasbourg again, in what has now become an annual weekend visit (previously in 2004 and 2005 – I’m sure we went in 2003 aswell but I can’t find the pictures).

As usual we set off early on the Saturday morning, arriving in Strasbourg in time for lunch, and then spent the afternoon walking around the shops before going for dinner in one of the many traditional Alsatian restaurants.

On Sunday we drove down the Road of the Wine, this time stopping in St. Hippolyte to check out the wine shops. Unfortunately most of them were closed, but we managed to find one that was open and willing to let us sample their wines.

According to the owner of the Kientzel winery, tourism in the region has declined in the last few years, and sales are dropping. We did our bit to boost the local economy by buying a couple of boxes of wine – Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Gris.

Continuing to catch up with the updates, here are some pictures from the weekend in Strasbourg, which was my first visit to France (if you discount my 3-hour stopover at CDG on the way to New York).
